Photographs Online Totals $2,774,394
NEW YORK – On Wednesday, 3 April, Christie’s concluded Photographs Online which totaled $2,774,394. The top lot was Irving Penn’s The Hand of Miles Davis, New York, July 1, 1986 which tripled its low estimate and set a new world record for the image when it sold for $302,400. Of the works sold, 40% sold above their high estimates.
The auction set two artist records: Peter Hujar’s Self-Portrait (with string around his neck), 1980 achieved $252,000 – more than five-times its low estimate. The second record came for Ralph Eugene Meatyard’s Romance (N). Of Ambrose Bierce #3, 1962, selling for $44,100, which was over four-times its low estimate.
Additional noteworthy results were achieved by Ana Mendieta’s Untitled (from Silueta series) 1978 from A Life Among Art: The Collection Of Ruth Miles Pite which sold for $81,900, five times the work’s low estimate.
