150 years of impressionism: the movement’s diversity to the full 

On 15 April 1874 in Paris, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Berthe Morisot, to name but a few, staged the world’s first Impressionist exhibition, thereby changing the course of art history forever. This 10 and 11 April, Christie’s will feature a number of works by the movement’s founders in the city where it all began – ahead of the Musée d’Orsay’s homage to 150 years of Impressionism in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Recently rediscovered, a remarkable portrait of early pioneer Berthe Morisot from the former collection of Jeannie Gobillard and Paul Valéry (Œuvres Choisies sale, €180,000-250,000) will be presented at the Œuvres Choisies sale. Entitled Petite fille aux cheveux blonds (Little girl with blonde hair), the reverse of this painting features a portrait of Berthe Morisot, painted after one by Édouard Manet (1832-1883), (1874, Musée d'Orsay, on loan to the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille). Remaining in the same collection since its creation, the reverse of this painting was long attributed to Berthe Morisot, before more recently being associated with the touch of Paule Gobillard (1867-1946), Morisot's niece, thus celebrating the lineage of artists in the same family.  Le Pont de Moret-sur-Loing, temps de crue by Alfred Sisley will be one of the week’s highlights. Painted in around 1889, this quintessentially Impressionist piece is sourced from Paul-Louis Weiller’s former collection (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €500,000 - 800,000). Les Coteaux de la Celle après Saint-Mammès (1884), another rare painting by Alfred Sisley, is one of the Impressionist pieces from a prestigious Swiss collection, never seen on the market before (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €400,000 - 600,000). Most notable among the many treasures from this collection are a Vue sur la gare d’Orléans, Saint-Sever, Rouen by Camille Pissarro (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €400,000 - 600,000), Le Petit bras d’Argenteuil by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €200,000 - 300,000), and Femme en blanc assise, an oil on cardboard painting by Édouard Vuillard making its first market appearance in 60 years (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €30,000 - 50,000). 

Nabis: defining pieces by Édouard Vuillard and Maurice Denis 

Alongside Édouard Vuillard’s Madame Hessel lisant son journal devant la cheminée, emblematic compositions by founding members of the Nabi movement will further highlight the 10 April Day Sale. Cornerstones include a Portrait de Marthe et de Maurice by Maurice Denis from the Sam Josefowitz Collection (Day Sale, €200,000 - 300,000), a magnificent fan-shaped painting from Paul-Elie Ranson’s collection, and several fine pieces by Paul Sérusier, including two Promenade du Dimanche (robe jaune and robe noire) exhibited at the Musée de Pont-Aven (Day Sale, €50,000 - 70,000 each). The selection is rounded out by Poule et Poussins by Pierre Bonnard (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €100,000 - 150,000) and a Portrait de Stéphane Mallarmé by Paul Gauguin, also from the Sam Josefowitz collection (Online Sale, €20,000 - 30,000). 

Season’s highlight: a never-before-seen André Derain painting 

The rediscovery of Matisse et Terrus, painted by André Derain in 1905, will be a major highlight of the season (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €2,000,000 - 3,000,000). Click here for the dedicated press release .This pivotal artwork – a testament to the movement's inception – will headline the week’s Fauvist chapter. 

Cubism: Section d’Or 

The Puteaux Group formed over the course of 1911. Along with a few poets and critics, Juan Gris, Robert Delaunay, Roger de La Fresnaye, and Jean Metzinger met either at the Duchamps brothers’ residence (Marcel Duchamp, Jacques Villon and Raymond Duchamp-Villon), or at Gleizes’ atelier in Courbevoie. Between chess games and discussions about Bergson’s reflections and the new mathematics, the group began planning a new exhibition – the Salon de la Section d’or – to showcase their latest artistic forays. The 10 April Day Sale boasts some very fine examples of the movement rarely found on the market, such as the remarkable Composition rythmique, quatre éléments by Albert Gleizes from a prestigious New York collection (Day Sale, €120,000 - 180,000), the Nature morte à la pomme by Jean Metzinger (Day Sale, €100,000 - 150,000) and an Étude pour le « Portrait de Madame Heim » by Robert Delaunay (Day Sale, €50,000 - 70,000). The week’s post-Cubist section concludes with Coquillage étude by Le Corbusier (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €300,000 - 500,000). 

Surrealism: Man Ray in the spotlight 

On 11 April 2024, at 2pm, Christie’s Paris presents the Man Ray dans la collection de Marion Meyer Sale. Entirely dedicated to one of Surrealism’s most significant artists, Christie’s auction is set to be the Surrealist event of the Paris season. Click here for the dedicated press release . Pieces by Max Ernst (Fleurs sur fond vert, Day Sale, €100,000 - 150,000) and Victor Brauner (La Leçon, Day Sale, €50,000 - 70,000) will be offered during the other auctions of the Week. 

Turn of the century and Symbolism 

In the wake of the Sam Josefowitz Paris and London auctions that proved to be some of the most successful events in the 2023 autumn art market, Christie’s Paris is staging a final sale curating an exceptional selection of late 19th-century prints from the collection. Along with Jeune femme assise vue de dos, regardant des dessins – a beautiful pastel by Paul César Helleu (Day Sale, €100,000 - 150,000) – the Online Sale will showcase a significant Symbolist section with an exquisite selection of works by Odilon Redon, and a rare Rodolphe Bresdin proof (Online Sale, €80,000 - 100,000), as well as several complete Max Klinger albums. An ensemble that Léon Spilliaert would have certainly approved. His spectacular Sirène (Baigneuse) painting from a major Belgian collection also appears in the 9 April auction (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €400,000 - 600,000). 

 Marc Chagall 

The upcoming 9 and 10 April sales will also spotlight Marc Chagall. As demonstrated by last year’s tremendous Chagall et la musique Sale, the artist remains a firm favourite in the art market. Among the highlights of the Week are Bouquet de fleurs avec amoureux (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €1,000,000 - 1,500,000), Les Amoureux aux fleurs (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €400,000 - 600,000), Le Chevalet (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €300,000 - 500,000), Repos du couple au bouquet (Day Sale, €280,000 - 450,000), and Fête du village pour les mariés (Day Sale, €220,000 - 280,000). 

Finally, Henri Matisse –one of the 20th century’s most significant figures alongside Picasso, Miró and Chagall – will be particularly celebrated in the Art Impressionniste et moderne : Œuvres Choisies Sale on 9 April. Christie’s Paris will auction one of the artist’s magnificent Paysage aux environs de Nice from around 1918, as well as three new-to-the-market works directly from a member of the Matisse family’s own collection: a very vivid self-portrait in India ink (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €80,000 - 120,000); Jeanette II, a sculpture from the five “Jeanettes” series created in 1910 (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €100,000 - 150,000), and a strikingly colourful early Fauvist flower vase (Œuvres Choisies Sale, €300,000 - 500,000).
