Important Chinese Art Including the Collection of Dorothy Tapper Goldman Totals: $19,128,134

New York Christie’s Asian Art Week live auction series closed with two days of competitive bidding from around the world and in a packed saleroom, as Important Chinese Art Including the Collection of Dorothy Tapper Goldman totaled 19,128,134, selling 123% hammer above low estimate, and 85% by lot. There was strong participation from buyers worldwide with 39% from the United States, and 52% from Asia. The top lot was a superb and very rare Ge Foliate Dish from the Southern Song-Yuan Dynasty (1127-1368), which realized $1,865,000. Additional top lots included a large blue and white 'Dragon' dish with Yongzheng six-character mark (1723-1735), which nearly tripled its low estimate, selling for $819,000. A rare and finely-cast Imperial gilt-bronze figure of Seated Amitayus from the Kangxi Period (1662-1722) sold for $781,200, and a rare green marble-inset Huanghuali wine table from the 17th Century achieved nearly five-times its low estimate, selling for $730,8000. The full results of the sale are available on Christie’s Website.

Vicki Paloympis, Head of Christie’s Chinese Works of Art Department said: “The market for Chinese ceramics and works of art continues to be strong. With 39% of buyers from the Americas and 52% from Asia Pacific, we are thrilled with the worldwide interest and spirited bidding we saw online, on the phones, and in the Christie’s saleroom. Rare ceramics from private collections commanded high prices, including a crackle-glazed Ge foliate dish from the Southern Song-Yuan dynasty and a large blue and white ‘dragon’ dish from the Yongzheng period. We also continue to have great success with single-owner American collections, as evidenced by the collection of Dorothy Tapper Goldman, which totaled $2,799,200, and a group of Song-Qing ceramics from the Alita Davis Weaver collection, which realized $1,268,820, 330% of the low estimate.”

Asian Art Week continues with four online auctions that remain open for bidding until next week.
