MEDIA ALERT | Christie’s Hong Kong Handbags & Accessories Department presentsA Collection Of Iconic Louis Vuitton Trunks Through The Ages
Hong Kong – Christie’s is delighted to offer a remarkable selection of iconic trunks by Louis Vuitton, manufactured between 1886 to 2019, in the upcoming live auction on 27 November. These trunks represent not only the evolution of travel through the centuries but also the craftsmanship and innovation of luggage design by this legendary French fashion house.
Beginning his career as a maker of boxes in the 1830s, Louis Vuitton introduced numerous radical designs and became the travel goods manufacturer of choice among the European aristocracy. In the 19th Century, explorers and adventurers wanted luggage which would safeguard their most precious possessions, so Louis Vuitton created the Explorer collection, featuring hardwearing zinc, copper, aluminium and brass pieces, which today often fetches record prices at Christie’s auctions. An example of this is a rare, zinc explorer trunk manufactured in 1886 (shown top left, estimate: HK$300,000 - 400,000/ US$39,000 - 52,000).
Through the ages, Louis Vuitton constantly updated and innovated their classic models, which is particularly the case under the leadership of the current menswear artistic director Virgil Abloh. As part of his Fall/Winter 2019 runway show, he presented a Michael-Jackson inspired collection that saw bright neon colour combinations woven throughout his designs. The standout of the show included a classic Malle Courrier trunk updated to feature a modern neon rainbow gradation and Abloh's signature 'X', which will be offered at auction coming November. This innovative design perfectly balances today's contemporary urban styling with the maison's luxury craftsmanship (shown top right, estimate: HK$400,000 - 500,000/ US$52,000 - 65,000).
