ANCIENT GREEK VASES FROM THE ZIMMERMANN COLLECTION & ANTIQUITIES
NEW YORK – Christie’s New York is pleased to announce Ancient Greek Vases from the Zimmermann Collection and Antiquities, two live auctions taking place 9 April. Ancient Greek Vases from the Zimmermann Collection features the finest and most comprehensive selection of Athenian black- and red-figured pottery to appear at auction in decades and Antiquities contains a fine selection of works from across the ancient Mediterranean, including objects from ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian cultures, ranging from the 3rd millennium B.C. to the 3rd century A.D. Curated by Dr. Manfred Zimmermann (1935-2011) over the course of nearly 40 years, the collection was exhibited at his private museum, the Antikenmuseum im Schnoor, in Bremen, Germany, from 2005-2018 and later at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg from 2018-2023.
Antiquities is led by an impressive Egyptian Green Schist Votive Cubit Rod for Mery-Ptah, dating to circa 1330-1250 B.C., once in the collection of Édouard Louis Joseph, 1st Baron Empain (1852-1929). Also presented is a group of ancient and European engraved gems from the collection of Dr. Corinne Bronfman (1947-2022) of Washington, D.C. This important selection of over 50 intaglios and cameos features rediscoveries of gems from the famed Arundel, Marlborough, Story-Maskelyne and Mertens-Schaaffhausen collections. Other highlights include a three-quarter life-sized Roman Marble Statue of a Goddess; an Egyptian Limestone Relief from the Old Kingdom (2686-2125 B.C.); a Roman Marble Altar; and a Roman Bronze Venus, formerly in the collection of Louis de Clercq (1836-1901).
