CHRISTIE’S IMPRESSIONIST AND MODERN ART DAY AND WORKS ON PAPER SALE ACHIEVED £16.8 MILLION
London – Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art Day and Works on Paper Sale achieved a total of £16,878,456 / $21,587,545 / €19,714,037, with strong sell-through rates of 92% by value and 88% by lot. This brings the running total for the 20/21 March season to £213,564,056 / $271,968,314 / €249,049,446.
Following the strength of results for German Expressionists in the 20th / 21st Century: London Evening Sale on 7 March, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s Sonnentänzerin led the sale, realising a price of £781,200. Marc Chagall’s Fleurs et fruits achieved £730,000 with further works by Chagall, formerly from the artist’s estate, far exceeding pre-sale expectations, highlighted by Femme avec enfant et animal, which realised £126,000 against an estimate of £15,000-20,000 and Amoureux aux profils vert et rose, which sold for £100,800 (estimate: £15,000-20,000).
On International Women’s Day, and following a record set for the artist on 7 March at Christie’s, Hannah Höch’s Bürgerliches Brautpaar (Streit) sold for £264,600 (estimate: £50,000-80,000) while Suzanne Valadon’s Femme nue assise sold for £239,400 against an estimate of £60,000-80,000.
Coinciding with the centenary of the Surrealist Manifesto, René Magritte’s Jesus Christus [Tête de Christ] sold for double the high estimate, realising £201,600 and Victor Brauner’s Personnage dans un paysage surréaliste achieved £119,700 (estimate: £35,000-55,000).
